About
Hi! Curious who I am? Me too!
- I'm the luckiest father and husband in the world ❤️
- I'm fortunate to have used computers for my entire life
- The first program I ever wrote was copied from a computer manual onto a Timex Sinclair 1000
- I remember watching Second Reality for the first time and still think about it a lot
- I ran a Maximus bulletin board system (a FidoNet node!) for three years
- I wrote a free, open-source textbook for learning Python a few years ago (and it could be updated--sorry!)
- I've played bass on and off for a few decades
- In university, I was in a few bands, and made a few CDs (remember those?)
- I also took part in Queen's Players as a cast member, bass player, and 2x musical director
- My high school stage band director let me perform a bass solo during a competition (good choice imo, everybody loves bass solos)
- I've had a real mix of breadth and depth in my career
- Local funding to address the Y2K problem helped me pay for school (it was real, nerds)
- My first post-university job was at Electronic Arts, and about six months after I started, the easpouse post was published
- I worked at the G in FAANG for a short time and left to return to grad school
- I completed a Ph.D. in software engineering that evaluated statistical modelling and human evaluation
- I made a let's play for Zombies, Run! and then later got hired by the studio
- I've written a lot of software!
- I made a Slack emoji generator called party-party-party that's used to bring a bit more joy to work
- Twelve Sands was my anti-World of Warcraft, a PHP/MySQL browser-based role playing game with thousands of players
- I added two instructions (new thread, and assert) to Brainfuck to enable model checking for a graduate course
- I wrote a Winboard chess bot which played on freechess.org
